Won’t we be happier if we just fix our problems?

Of course. If you have problems with money, health or your relationship (for example) then yes, if you can fix those problems you will be happier. You will gain that first type of happiness, the temporary kind. Fixing problems relieves unhappiness. Nipping problems in the bud prevents unhappiness. This book isn’t about relieving or preventing unhappiness. It’s about what makes a person happy.

In 2010 an ABC Australian television documentary about happiness fixed its participants’ problems. Had the documentary helped those people become happier without fixing their problems I would have been impressed.

Happiness is not about fixing the storm, or avoiding the storm; it’s about dealing with the storm.
